This preseason, the basketball elite gathered in the United Arab Emirates for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Games. For the third consecutive year, the Association has decided to extend its global reach in this beautiful, sun-kissed desert oasis.
This time around, two of the most recent championship teams will compete in two exhibition clashes: the newly crowned 18-time Champs Boston Celtics and the Denver Nuggets , who lifted the first Larry O'Brien trophy in franchise history back in 2023.
Although the Friday game had a semi-competitive character, the fans could once again enjoy NBA basketball after a three-and-a-half-month break. The C's managed to steal the 107-103 win in the back-and-forth contest that saw extended rotation and plenty of young players fighting for minutes.
Familiar faces in different uniforms
Leading the way for Boston was Payton Pritchard, with 21 points, including shooting six from 12 from long range. From the Denver side, Nikola Jokic was the most efficient player, despite playing only 17 minutes. The Serbian center had 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and was super efficient from the field. After the game the Joker reflected his newest additions in Russell Westbrook and Dario Saric.
"It was the first time we played together against other team. Russell keeps doing what he's been doing, while Dario gives some kind of safety. He will always make the right play, he won't take any bad shot... He gives us security, and Russell gives us speed. So it is interesting combination," said Jokic at the press conference after the Friday's game.
Westbrook is coming into his 17th season in the league, and as crazy as it may seem, he is now a seasoned vet that helps to build team chemistry and lead the second unit with his energetic style of play. The addition of the former MVP will significantly boost Denver's firepower, which was something that they badly lacked during the last years playoff push.
The Croatian forward, on the other hand, is someone that still haven't proved himself on the biggest stage. He was always a servicable players, but he never got the real chance he can be a vital piece on a championship contender. The Nuggets, however, might be a perfect chance for a 30-year-old Saric to demonstrate what he's been always known for; an impeccable feel for the game, and a solid outside shot for a big man.
Although this is just the preseason, it is up to the new players to prove themselves and earn the coach's trust, which will eventually lead to more playing time and success for the entire team.
The next contest is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 6, 6 PM GST at the Ethihad Arena.
