Once regarded as the most underrated team in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons were habitual of defying the odds, as evidenced by them winning multiple championships in different eras as the underdogs. However, in recent years, the team has consistently battled not to register the worst record in the league.

Recognizing the need for a turnaround, new head coach JB Bickerstaff has introduced significant changes within the organization, such as instilling an 'old school mentality' through strict dress code policies. While the strategy could extensively backfire with the modern generation of players, Chandler Parsons strongly supports it.

    JB issues stern measures

Despite boasting a roster of talented players, the Pistons have struggled with discipline, ultimately hindering these youngsters from maximizing their potential. In response, Bickerstaff decided to ban hoodies and pieces of jewelry for all players, even during practice sessions.

When asked about the rationale behind these changes, the 45-year-old head coach explained that he wants his players to approach practices with the same level of seriousness as games. That way, JB ensures that their focus remains on their performance on the court rather than on their appearance.

"We don't have a dress code. There's just certain things - as far as jewelry and wearing hoodies and stuff like that during practice - and it's just kind of a combination of some old-school things we grew up with to instill some discipline," Bickerstaff said per The Athletic. "We don't make guys tuck their shirts in or wear the same outfit. We're trying to create an environment where there is discipline."

    Parsons supports Bickerstaff's militant approach

Having worked with JB during his time with the Houston Rockets, Chandler admitted on the 'Run It Back' show that such dress code policies are not entirely new. Moreover, he praised Bickerstaff for seeking to instill discipline in his young team, admitting that such measures would not have been taken had the latter taken over as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, who have experienced stars.

"The Detroit Pistons are fully rebuilding. They're a younger team, they're looking to set a culture there," Parsons said. "This isn't like a new thing that he's doing out of nowhere, this has always been kinda his principles. I also think if he took the Lakers job, instead of JJ, I don't think he's doing this with LeBron and Anthony Davis. I think he's trying to create a culture in Detroit."

Although these steps do seem strict, Bickerstaff's approach signals his commitment to revitalizing the morale inside the Pistons' organization, even if it involves using unconventional old-school tactics. By the look of things, it seems JB is trying everything in his power to ensure the franchise doesn't miss the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season.
