City of Bastrop held monthly City Council Meeting tonight

BASTROP, La. (KTVE/KARD) —

The City of Bastrop held their monthly city council meeting tonight to talk about some of the issues within the city. A few past and current resolutions were brought up, selling of some property, and some newly appointed to the city of Bastrop.

Although there has been a recent increase in crime rate, it was not the main concern in the meeting. They first approved resolution NO 24-2070, which would authorize the issuance of 5,580,000 dollars towards street improvement.

This sales tax would not increase the current sales tax already in place for the City of Bastrop, not affecting the citizens, but helping improve road conditions.

The next issue brought up was resolution NO 22-1993 for budget 2024-2025 by many citizens in the room. This budget was talked about on a special meeting held on June 20th, 2024 but was then not published correctly before voting on it.

Therefore this budget was could not be put in place the next meeting, postponing the budget even further. The council has asked for a special request to start from scratch and create a new budget of 2024-2025 in the next coming months and put it into place. The main concern for this budget was towards the safety of the citizens of Bastrop and funding patrol officers for the area.

I’d like to make a motion to assess the 25 / 24 budget for a special meeting, with a specific date and time.

A few properties within the city were then presented and passed to be sold to buyers outside the city.

Mayor Betty Alford-Olive did also assure the citizens that they are indeed working on many projects to improve the city. However, some have been pushed back due to some budgeting and communication issues but will be started soon.

Old members were commended for their retirement before new members were appointed for various positions in the city. These will be released in a later statement.

Although crime was not discussed as thought to be, budget 24-25 will be restarted and done properly within the next few months. An Attorney was there to help clarify the issue and help restart the next process for the new budget.
