Ellis wins 504th medal – Senior Olympian competes in Biloxi

Despite battling dementia and Parkinson’s Disease, Batesville resident Ken Ellis, 79, was not satisfied with a “measly” 500 medals in his collection.

It took him a couple of years; however, Ellis traveled to Biloxi in March to participate in the Senior Olympics state competition where he earned another four medals for his collection.

He won two bronze medals – one each in the javelin and shot-put competitions, and two silver medals—one each in the discus and hammer throw competitions.

A retired Memphis firefighter, Ellis has been competing in track and field competitions since 1985, in the World Police and Fire Games and in more recent years, the Senior Olympics.

He used to participate in running races like the 100- and 200-meter dash events; however, he said his health prevents him from taking part in running races now.

“We just feel so fortunate that he was able to compete this year and not have any complications or falling down or anything,” said his wife, Linda Ellis.

When asked how he keeps in shape, Ellis said he trains when he can and tries to eat healthy.

“Peaches,” he said. “I eat a lot of peaches.”
