BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The thought of a child learning science and math on a Saturday might not sound fun. An interactive exhibit at the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum is looking to change that.

“The Seed” is LASM’s newest hands-on experience and is designed with a heavy focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM).

“Each letter of STEAM is featured with an interactive exhibit that both reflects its associated discipline and connects with other disciplines. LASM hopes to inspire the museum’s young artists and scientists to pursue education and career pathways in STEAM fields and gain a deeper understanding of how STEAM is relevant to their daily lives,” said Marion Mayfield, the Communications Manager at LASM.

The whole family can enjoy ” The Seed,” but it isn’t geared for small children. It’s designed mostly for kids attending about third grade to middle or high school.

Young artists and scientists can explore Earth’s 118 elements with the museum’s Interactive Periodic Table, solve engineering challenges with the Rube Goldberg Machine Wall and create shapes and patterns with light and color with LASM’s Everbright.

“The Seed” is wheelchair friendly and accessible to a wide variety of visitors, Mayfield said.

“There are bright light components to the design of the space, but none that would be considered as flashing,” she said. “Being a space that is targeted towards kids ages 8 to 15, the area could potentially get loud, but the exhibitions themselves are friendly to those with audio-sensitive children.”

LASM opened “The Seed” on Jan. 27 and plans to expand it with a Laser Harp, a one-of-a-kind tool that is used to create music inspired by math. Mayfield said the new addition should be completed by the end of March.

“The museum plans to continue renovating its ‘children’s areas’ to create four interactive, STEAM-based spaces, collectively called The STEAM Station,” Mayfield said.
