Since LSU baseball gets a lot of attention, many college baseball fans of the sport have not noticed what Jacob Mayers has done on the bayou. Mayers has been good as any pitcher in Louisiana over the last two seasons.

Mayers committed to LSU over the weekend after compiling a 14-2 record with a 3.26 ERA in two seasons at Nicholls. The former St. Amant Gator struck out 211 hitters in 146.1 innings as he helped the Colonels to two Southland Conference Tournament titles and two appearances in the Regionals.

His freshman season was spectacular as he went 9-1 with 2.02 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 75.2 innings. Mayers was named as a freshman All-American, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named him as the Freshman Pitcher of the year.

Mayers didn’t have as much success in his sophomore season as his walks increased from 58 in his freshman season to 76.

Mayers is 6-foot-5, and his fastball can get into the upper 90s. Developing his secondary pitches will be the key to his success and also controlling his fastball.

Coach Jay Johnson has received eight commitments out of the transfer portal, only one player, Auburn outfielder Chris Stanfield comes from a major conference.

One of the keys to the 2025 season will be these transfers adapting quickly to play in the SEC.
