LSU needs to win another football game.

Nine regular season wins have been fine in the first two years under Brian Kelly. This year, there has to be a tenth to prove it belongs in the VIP lounge.

That 2019 team that had one of the greatest teams and seasons in the history of college football glossed over way too many disappointments - LSU went 11-12 over the next two years after the national championship.

The 2018 team would’ve made it in a 12-team expanded College Football Playoff format, along with 2019. None of the other teams over the last ten seasons would’ve been in.

Compare that to the run from Nick Saban through the peak of the Les Miles era when the program would’ve had its mail delivered to the CFP had it existed then.

It’s been fun at times, and certainly the place is a factory for NFL talent, but LSU has been underwhelming for what it is.

It might seem unreasonable and it might be unfair, but this year Kelly needs to get LSU to the expanded College Football Playoff, or the campaign will be a bust.

By any reasonable standard, like being the winningest coach in the history of Notre Dame football, Kelly has been amazing.

Winning ten games two years in a row anywhere should be a reason to celebrate, especially when there’s a Heisman winner coming out of one of them. But LSU is supposed to be in the national title mix.

That should be a given, not an outlier.

Instead, LSU has been knocked out of the national championship chase by mid-October in each of Kelly’s two seasons.

So now set the bar at 10-2, at least, for LSU.

Do that, get into the CFP, and LSU will be doing what LSU is supposed to.
