Incoming LSU freshman Trey’Dez Green will try to be a two-sport star

In the 1980s and 90s there were two-sport stars Bo Jackson, Brian Jordan and Deion Sanders. Locally, Ben McDonald was an All-American pitcher and also played basketball for Dale Brown. It was certainly rare back then and now it’s nearly non-existent.

Former Florida State stars Charlie Ward and Jameis Winston are the latest two sport athletes that come to mind. Both were Heisman winning trophy quarterbacks for the Seminoles. Ward ended up having an eleven-year career in the NBA and not playing in the NFL. Winston played college baseball before focusing strictly on football.

A couple of others of note, Julius Peppers at North Carolina and Jimmy Graham at Miami.

Incoming LSU freshman tight end Trey’Dez Green has plans to be a two-sport star for the Tigers. He’s a freak of an athlete at six-foot-seven and even though LSU has some depth at the tight end position, it might be difficult to keep him off the field, because of his ability to jump and catch passes over defenders.

Green was one of the top high school football players in the state last year, catching 53 passes for 960 yards and 12 touchdowns. He helped the Zachary Broncos get to the Division I non-select state championship game.

Prior to his senior season at Zachary, Green was a prep star at East Feliciana High School. Green, who didn’t play basketball at Zachary was an All-State hoops player for East Feliciana, averaging 24 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks a game.

During his recruitment, there was buzz Green might want to play both sports at LSU. It appears that’s the plan as the LSU men’s basketball team roster has Green’s name on it. Green has expressed that basketball is his true love.

Former LSU star Marcus Spears had plans to play football and basketball after a standout prep career at Southern Lab. But his body was beat up after his freshman season and made the decision to leave the men’s basketball program.

Chad Jones, Jared Mitchell, Chris Jackson, Maurice Hampton and Spencer Ware are among the recent LSU athletes who played football and baseball.

Trindon Holliday and Bennie Brazell played football and track.

I would personally love to see Green play both sports. But it will be difficult, especially if the Tigers make a deep run in the new twelve team college football playoff.

The national championship game for the upcoming college football season is January 20, 2025.
