LSU students head to Paris to cover 2024 Summer Olympics

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — We’re just days away from the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and the LSU Manship School of Communication is sending over two dozen students to cover the world’s largest sporting event.

“There’s more than 30 LSU representatives competing in this summer’s Olympic Games.” said Chad Sabadie, LSU Manship Olympics project director.

The school is allowing 25 graduate and undergraduate students to earn credit towards their degree.

“You know it’s going to be chaotic but it’s going to be structured chaos, which is good,” said Ben Hagen, LSU junior, Mass Communication student.

For some students, this will be their first time traveling abroad.

“Anything is possible when it comes to your like, dreams. I wouldn’t have ever expected for me to go to the Olympics, honestly,” said Marileah Niddre, LSU Mass Communication graduate student.

The group will make three stops on their two-week trip. They’ll spend four days in Marseille, four days in Leon and seven days in Paris.

“I realize that I got excited. I was like, oh, now, now this is a challenge. I need to challenge myself to learn all the stuff about the Olympics and the history and the significance of Paris 2024,” said Cade Williams, LSU senior, Mass Communication student.

Students will cover everything from the Olympic Games to the food and culture. They will create cookbooks, podcasts, documentaries and more.

“Everything is free will. You get to choose whatever you want to write about and cover. We have an individual project and then, also a group project,” said Teyanah Owens, LSU Mass Communication graduate student.

“I’d like to study the intersection between sports, politics, and culture because I feel like that’s really what the Olympics means.” said Hagen.

Sabadie, a former broadcaster, turned program director, says it’s an opportunity of a lifetime.

“The last time Paris hosted was 100 years ago, 1924. So, 100 years later, a century later, for our students to be there to provide their unique take on the Summer Olympic Games, I think it’s going to be a perfect representation of all of us,” said Sabadie.
