BAY HEAD — Residents and visitors of Bay Head should work up an appetite, as the Bay Head Fire Company’s Annual Clambake is returning next month.

On Aug. 17, rain or shine, members of the Bay Head Fire Company alongside volunteers will be serving burgers, hot dogs, hot roast beef sandwiches, soda, beer and craft beers, and of course thousands of clams. Chowders, steamed and raw clams will be available.

From 12 to 5 p.m., attendees can enjoy the festivities with live music by Big Bang Baby.

Limited tickets are available for this event, so residents are encouraged to get them quickly. Presale tickets cost $50, and are only accepted via cash or check only. The presale ends on Aug. 16. Tickets can be purchased online at EventBrite or after the presale for $55.

Residents are encouraged to stop by the Bay Head Firehouse, located at 81 Bridge Ave., to pick up tickets. The doors are open on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. until noon.

This yearly event, which began in 1967, is the only charity event the fire department holds over the year, as enough revenue is generated from the clambake to keep the fire department in business.

Since its inception, the event has grown exponentially. When the clambake first began, one person with a clipboard was able to control everything. However, now with over 1,000 residents flooding the firehouse and Bay Avenue, well over 90 volunteers are needed to ensure the event goes smoothly — whether they are selling tickets, shucking clams or simply engaging with the public.

Fire Chief Dan Guestel told The Ocean Star, “The clambake is more than just an important fundraiser for the fire company. It has become a staple of the community that is synonymous with Art in the Park or the Christmas Walk. The clambake allows family, friends, neighbors and visitors to share in some good-hearted fun and helps to build that sense of community.”
