CENTREVILLE — Queen Anne’s County High School senior Julia Reburn has dedicated the past three years to reigniting her creative spirit, garnering multiple accolades as she connects with her visual identity.

As a junior, Julia became one of three founding members of QACHS’ first all-women’s wrestling team, which evolved into a state championship wrestling team within a year. Additionally, she has excelled as a member of the field hockey team, establishing herself as an exceptional athlete and competitor.

Through the arts, Julia discovered not only a competitive voice but also a creative one.

“I took an art class my sophomore year and fell back in love with creating,” shared Julia. “I found I could express emotions and experiences that I had bottled up without having to say anything at all. I’ve recently discovered a passion for 3-D work, exploring different materials, relationships, environments, and printmaking.”

Julia has been recognized as a 2024 Scholastic Art Regional Gold Key recipient, qualifying her for the national competition as a potential Scholastic Art Gold or Silver medalist.

She has also graced the stage as a speaker at the Kent Island Federation of Art’s 60th Diamond Jubilee. Notably, she was honored with the ‘Most Imaginative Use of Materials’ at last year’s ArtScene, demonstrating her embrace of experimentation and exploration in her sculptural endeavors.

“Art has given Julia an outlet to express herself in a much more creative way. It has become a sanctuary that allows her to calm her mind when the world gets too busy, providing a means for her to express her feelings,” said her mother. “It has been a blessing in her growth as an artist, as a student, and as a person.”

“From sculpting her twin brother’s bust using thin sheets of metal to crocheting with metal wire as an homage to her grandmother’s yarn creations, Julia seamlessly weaves personal narratives into her art. Her non-traditional techniques and investigations of different materials have amplified her ability to express her distinct artistic voice,” shared art teacher Stephanie Zeiler.

“I’ve seen Julia wrestle like a warrior on the mat, and I’ve seen the creative inner workings of her mind on full display in her visual journals, and in the incredible 3-D pieces she has been creating in her 3-D Studio Art class. I couldn’t be happier for her that she won a Scholastic Art Gold Key this year. That’s such a tremendous accomplishment, and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person,” said Michael Bell, Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts for QACPS,

You can see Julia’s work showcased at ArtScene 2024 on April 23rd from 5 — 8 p.m. at Queen Anne’s County High.
