BAY VIEW — This summer marks the 20th year that the Bay View Association has hosted the Little Traverse CROP Walk and 10 years of packing meals for Meals of Hope.

The Little Traverse CROP Walk will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 29, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. The walk starts and ends at Evelyn Hall on the Bay View campus.

The walk will be around three miles throughout Bay View. Those who are unable to walk but want to participate can gather on the porch of Evelyn Hall.

The CROP Hunger Walk is a nationwide movement sponsored by Church World Service to raise funds to end hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world. CROP Walk funds alleviate world hunger, with 25 percent of all funds raised staying in the Petoskey area to support local food banks.

Over the past 19 years, the Little Traverse CROP Hunger Walk has contributed about $120,000 to local food banks, with approximately $500,000 raised overall. This year’s goal is $25,000 in contributions.

“I've enjoyed volunteering with others from Bay View and nearby churches to coordinate the Little Traverse CROP Walk,” said organizer and Bay View member Rob Scarrow. “The walk is always held in Bay View the last Saturday in June. It raises awareness and funds for hunger relief projects, including support of the local Manna Food Project.”

Those who can’t attend in person can support the walk by making a tax-deductible donation to a CROP walker or online at events.crophungerwalk.org/cropwalks/event/petoskey.

In addition to the walk, youth from Bay View day camps will pack thousands of meals for local families through Meals of Hope on July 12.

Bay View residents Steven Popper and Charisa Dines-Popper underwrite the event. Each year, over 15,000 meals are packed by Bay View campers and distributed locally.
