Roundup: Caesar Rodney advances in girls' soccer, boys' lacrosse

Fourth-seeded Caesar Rodney High netted a pair of second-half goals to top No. 5 Odessa, 2-0, in the DIAA Division I girls’ soccer state quarterfinals on Wednesday evening.

The win earns the Riders (12-3-1) a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Middletown (16-0) on Wednesday at a time and site TBD.

The Cavaliers downed No. 8 Delcastle, 7-0, in their quarterfinal game.

On Wednesday, senior Alexandra Soghomonian broke the scoreless tie on a goal at the 45-minute mark. Freshman Lyla Nadel then added an insurance goal 21 minutes later.

Freshman goalie Eva Sheppard made 11 saves as CR held advantages of 14-11 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks.

Sophomore Elizabeth Cebula made 12 saves for the Ducks, who finish the season at 10-5-1.

Division II

Caravel 1, Delmar 0: The third-seeded Buccaneers scored the game’s only goal in the 38th minute to edge the No. 6 Wildcats in the Division II state quarterfinals.

Lily Baker made 13 saves for Delmar, which closes the season with a record of 12-5. Caravel out-shot the Wildcats, 14-1.

Boys’ lacrosse

Caesar Rodney 19, Sanford 4: Ian Betts (5 assists) and Parker Smith (1 assist) netted five goals apiece as the No. 3 Riders rolled to the win in the first round of the DIAA state tournament.

CR (12-4) next hosts sixth-seeded Tatnall (11-5) on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the state quarterfinals.

The Riders opened a 12-3 halftime advantage against the No. 14 Warriors (8-8). Julius Timmons and Braxton Faircloth both added three goals and a pair of assists while Dylan Bennett made 12 saves.

Softball

Saint Mark’s 7, Sussex Tech 3: The third-seeded Spartans downed the No. 19 Ravens in the second round of the DIAA state tournament on Wednesday.

Saint Mark’s (15-3) will host the winner of Thursday’s matchup between Cape Henlopen and Polytech on Saturday.

College baseball

Delaware 7, William & Mary 3: Fourth-seeded Blue Hens scored five first-inning runs before downing the No. 5 Tribe in the first round of the CAA Tournament on Wednesday.

Delaware (30-24) will take on No. 2 UNCW at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the double-elimination tourney being played in Wilmington, N.C.

Delaware designated hitter Aiden Stewart finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a home run. Aidan Kane was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Aaron Graeber provided the big blow with a three-run homer in the opening frame.

Right-hander Doug Marose (4-2) earned the win for the Hens after limiting the Tribe to five hits and one earned run over six innings. Eli Atiya gave up two hits and a run over the final three frames to pick up his third save.

Delaware’s defense also turned three double plays.

Merrimack 11, Delaware State 1: The fifth-seeded Hornets dropped their second game of the day and were eliminated from the NEC Tournament on Wednesday.

DelState trailed only 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth before No. 3 Merrimack scored the game’s final eight runs.

Earlier in the day, the Hornets fell to No. 4 Wagner, 10-8, when the Seahawks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh of the nine-inning contest.

DelState finishes with a record of 22-27 in its final season under coach J.P. Blandin.
