DOVER — Various aspects of Delaware libraries’ computer systems were shut down by a ransomware attack Sept. 20, affecting certain facilities’ Wi-Fi and the machines available to visitors.

State librarian Dr. Annie Norman said Monday that all Wi-Fi services were back up and running, but desktop computers available to guests were still unavailable.

She added that the investigation is ongoing but that the libraries are in good shape.

“So, it could be that we find something, but for the most part, we think that we have come off pretty well,” she said.

She thinks the facilities have a good record of solving such issues.

“I looked back to see (that) we have been managing the network for a quarter of a century, and so, we want it to be 100%, but we still have a pretty good track record,” Dr. Norman added.

For the time being, administrators are providing as many laptops as possible to libraries across the state.

“It may be a while yet before the regular computers are back up, but people can use Wi-Fi in the meantime,” Dr. Norman said. “We are trying to call in the Chromebooks, so people have something that they can use. We have some, but a lot of them are checked out.”

She remains optimistic, stating, “We consider ourselves pretty fortunate. These things are never easy. We are getting a lot of recommendations, and so, as they say, we will build back better.”

Delaware’s libraries fall under the purview of the Department of State, whose director of policy and communications, Rony Baltazar-Lopez, could not be reached for additional comment this week.
