The pandemic IS the main cause of this crisis. When shelters cleared their facilities, most of the animals were unaltered, and most did not get spayed or neutered (and owners allowed them to breed). When the pandemic was deemed "over" and people started going back to work, these pets became a nuisance and ended up being dumped or abandoned. Not all but an overwhelming number did. The pandemic also created the horrible crisis we are seeing w/vet care, outrageous increase in cost and the difficulties receiving timely services, especially for spays and neuters. Don't blame shelters. Shelters are inundated w/the intake numbers of "stray" or abandoned animals and owner surrenders. Where are these animals supposed to go if shelters are 130%-150% over capacity? Shelters can not keep piling animals on top of animals. Overcrowded shelters run the risk of fatal diseases (e.g., parvo, distemper) or kennel stress. Don't blame shelters. Blame IRRESPONSIBLE pet owners.
