There was a large crowd today. Compassion Cafe is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hot coffee, cold brew, tea, bagels, pastries, quiche, and a dog bakery are all available for purchase. All proceeds support the Cafe.
THE STORY OF COMPASSION CAFE SEASON FOUR
On behalf of our Board of Trustees, Volunteer Team, and our Staff families “welcome back” to our fourth season. I trust you were greeted with a smile and served with confidence…maybe you’ll even be delighted by one of our many performances.
In fact, while I write this in the off-season, 30 staff members are preparing to present “Grease In Concert” to the delight of an expected 600+.
This is just one of many ways we extend the heart beat of Compassion Cafe and socialize year round. During the summer we generally get together weekly for some fun event- please ask our staff what’s on the calendar next . Know that your presence today provides hope and possibilities for paid employment to 70+ people with special needs.
You might even notice we sometimes have over 30 extraordinary people working on the same shift, wanting to interact with you. We know we are overstaffed. Payroll at $15.20/hr for over 70 employees makes no business sense for a little cafe.
And since 2020, we’ve been in awe of the support from so many endorsing and supporting this mission and our vision to include all.
We pay no rent and in an unimaginable act of kindness, are graciously hosted here at the Sea Shell and at our off-site home base, Terrace United Methodist Church.
While I give utmost credit to our volunteer team of 100+, the true driving force to keeping Compassion Cafe not only open, but thriving is the support from the community.
We are in borrowed space and selling products that pay only about 25% of our operating expenses. And yet, with the help of many, our staff finds paid employment as well as the same things we all want in life: VALUE, PURPOSE and the CONFIDENCE to PROSPER- just as each person is so beautifully made.
Together, we make that happen. Most of who I am is simply learned or copied from people smarter and sharper than I am. Those lessons become part of my very soul and here’s a perfect example of that. Originally quoted by Coach Jim Valvano and later shared in our newsletter by our editor: “To me there are three things everyone should do every day. Number one is laugh. Number two is think, spend time in thought. Number three, you should have your emotions move you to tears. If you laugh, think, and cry, that’s a heck of a day.”
We’ve learned that Compassion Cafe never fails to deliver on all three. Wishing you a “heck of a day” with big thanks for choosing to share it with us,
Sue Sharkey, Co-Founder and Board of Trustees President
