Exploring Sabino Canyon: A Hiker's Guide to Getting Around
2023-04-03
Hello fellow hikers and adventure enthusiasts! If you're living in or visiting Pima County, Arizona, chances are you've heard of the natural beauty that is Sabino Canyon. Nestled in the Santa Catalina Mountains, Sabino Canyon is a true desert oasis that offers a variety of trails, stunning landscapes, and endless opportunities for exploration. So, whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a fun day out, I've put together this guide on how to get around Sabino Canyon and make the most of your visit!
Getting There
First things first, let's talk about how to get to Sabino Canyon. The main entrance to Sabino Canyon Recreation Area is located at 5700 N. Sabino Canyon Road, just off Sunrise Drive. If you're driving, there's a parking lot at the visitor center where you can leave your car for a small fee (currently $8 per vehicle).
Visitor Center & Tram Service
Once you arrive, I recommend starting your visit at the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center. Here, you can pick up a map of the canyon, learn about its history, and get any last-minute supplies (like water, snacks, or sunscreen) you may need for your hike.
One of the unique features of Sabino Canyon is the tram service that takes visitors deeper into the canyon without having to hike all the way. The Sabino Canyon Crawler, an emission-free electric shuttle, is a great way to explore the canyon if you're short on time or not up for a long hike. The tram costs $15 for adults and $8 for kids (3-12 years), and it makes nine stops along the 3.8-mile route, allowing you to hop on and off as you, please. The tram runs every 1 hour, starting at 9:00 am, with the last tram departing at 4:00 pm. Keep in mind that the tram does not run on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day.
Hiking Trails
Now, let's dive into the main attraction: the hiking trails! Sabino Canyon offers trails for all skill levels, ranging from easy strolls to challenging hikes. Here are three of my favorite trails, each with its own unique features:
1. Sabino Canyon Trail (Easy)
If you're looking for a leisurely walk or have little ones with you, the Sabino Canyon Trail is perfect. This 2-mile roundtrip trail starts at the visitor center and follows Sabino Creek, offering beautiful views of the canyon and surrounding vegetation. Along the way, you'll find plenty of spots to stop, rest, and even take a dip in the creek if you're up for it.
2. Bear Canyon Trail to Seven Falls (Moderate)
For an intermediate hike with a rewarding destination, I recommend the Bear Canyon Trail to Seven Falls. This 8.2-mile roundtrip trail takes you through Bear Canyon, ultimately leading to the beautiful Seven Falls waterfall. The trail starts at the Bear Canyon Trailhead, which you can reach by taking the tram to stop #9 and then following the signs. The hike can be somewhat challenging, with some steep sections and several stream crossings, but the view of the waterfall is well worth the effort.
3. Sabino Canyon to Mount Lemmon (Challenging)
For experienced hikers seeking a full-day adventure, the hike from Sabino Canyon to Mount Lemmon is a must-do. This 15-mile point-to-point trail starts at the Sabino Canyon visitor center and climbs over 6,000 feet in elevation, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and city. The hike can be quite strenuous, so be prepared with plenty of water, snacks, and appropriate gear. Note that you'll need to arrange transportation back from the top of Mount Lemmon, as this is not a loop trail.
Final Tips
Before you head out to explore Sabino Canyon, here are a few final tips to ensure a successful adventure:
- Always carry plenty of water, as the Arizona heat can be intense, especially during the summer months.
- Wear appropriate footwear with good traction, as some trails can be rocky and slippery.
- Check the weather forecast before you go, and be prepared for sudden changes in weather, particularly during monsoon season.
- Keep an eye out for wildlife, including rattlesnakes, and give them plenty of space.
With its stunning landscapes, diverse trails, and unique tram service, Sabino Canyon offers a fantastic outdoor experience for hikers and nature lovers alike. I hope this guide helps you make the most of your visit to this beautiful desert oasis. Happy hiking!
