Junious Herbert Fulwood
Junious Herbert Fulford, known lovingly as Herbert, passed away on June 22, 2024. Born on October 1, 1936, in Beaufort County, Herbert was a man known for his steadfast dedication to his work and his family. The tranquility found in the small town of Lowland, N.C., where he resided for many years, was what Herbert cherished the most. A retired tugboat captain, Herbert was a pillar of strength, guiding his vessel through the roughest of seas, demonstrating his resilience and commitment in every aspect of his life. Herbert found joy in life’s simple gifts. He spent 32 rewarding years as a tugboat captain before retiring in 1988, but his love for the sea never waned. He filled his retirement years with activities that connected him to the land and sea he loved so much — hunting, fishing and cultivating his vegetable garden. As the saying goes, “The man who has done his level best... is a success, even though the world may write him down a failure.” This is a testament to Herbert, a man who lived his life doing his level best, seeking happiness in every sunrise and solace in every sunset. Herbert will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Mildred Fulford; his children, Herb and Wendy Fulford; and his grandson, Joshua Fulford; his siblings, Junious Jr., Rennie Johnson, and Gray Shackelford. Preceding him in death were his parents, Junious and Lucy Fulford; and his siblings, Murrell Fulford and Kay Carter. His family will celebrate his life privately. Herbert was a simple man, a hard worker, and a good provider — a shining beacon who guided his family through life’s storms, and whose memory will continue to guide them in the days to come. We invite you to leave your cherished memories and upload photos of Herbert to the memorial page. In doing so, we can all remember and celebrate the life of this remarkable man together. Bennett Funeral & Cremation Care is honored to serve the family and friends of Junious Herbert Fulford.
