Big Lots location in Moon Township set to close later this year, offering discounts

MOON TWP. ― As the Big Lots chain begins to close several brick-and-mortar locations around the country, one of their local stores has been added to the list of closures.

In a recent update to its list of closing stores, Big Lots announced that its location in Moon Township will permanently close as part of its corporate downsizing. The location, which sits next to the University Square retail development, is currently offering up to a 20% discount on some of its inventory as it prepares to leave the space before the end of the year.

According to USA Today , over 300 Big Lots stores could be closed nationwide as the discount retailer faces declining profits this year. In the first quarter, officials for the company reported a 10% decrease in retail sales. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company pointed to inflation contributing to decreased customer spending power for the decline in profits.

This is the second time a retail store in the Moon Township location has been affected by corporate downsizing. The space had previously served as a K-Mart, but in early 2018, the location was closed in a round of that retailer's store closures in communities nationwide.

Employees at the Big Lots locations indicated that an official final day for operations has not yet been set, as they hope to continue reducing their remaining inventory with store closing sales. According to these employees, an estimated date of Oct. 31 has been discussed as a potential closure date.

As of Aug. 7, the Big Lots location in Hopewell Township remained open and was not included on the list of closures.
