BRIGHTON TWP. ― As residents of Beaver County begin to dig out their fall yard care equipment, they may want to take the opportunity to safely dispose of some hazardous materials around the house during an upcoming event.

Beaver County officials have announced they are hosting their annual Hazardous Waste Collection Event at the Brady's Run Park Recycling Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 12. Residents are asked to pay a $20 fee to safely dispose of up to 10 gallons (or 50 pounds) of the approved items.

Items accepted at the event will include:

    • aerosol cans
    • automotive fluids (such as motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze or brake fluid)
    • batteries
    • camp fuel and small propane bottles
    • chemistry sets
    • compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs)
    • e-cigarettes
    • gasoline and kerosene
    • household cleaners (including ammonia, drain openers, acid cleaners and oven cleaners)
    • mercury thermometers
    • paint products (including latex or oil-based paints, craft chemicals, rust preservatives, creosote, water sealers, paint thinners and furniture strippers)
    • pesticides and herbicides (including rodent killers, insecticides, weed killers, mothballs and fertilizers)
    • photo chemicals
    • pool chemicals
    • smoke detectors

In addition to the items above, fire extinguishers can be recycled at the event for $12 per canister, and liquid mercury can be recycled for $15 per pound. All items intended for recycling should be placed in the trunks of cars or trucks' beds. At the discretion of the on-site staff, any oversized loads will be subject to additional fees.

Visitors are asked to preregister for the event on the Pennsylvania Resources Council website or by calling 412-488-7490. All forms of payment will be accepted at the event.
