MOON TOWNSHIP — Two goals off free kicks were the difference makers for No. 4 Beaver County Christian as the Eagles started off the WPIAL Class A playoffs with a strong all-around effort, defeating No. 13 Riverview 2-0 in the first round Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

BCCS came out strong in the first 10 minutes of the match and were the aggressors early on.

The Eagles had a number of chances on Raiders goalkeeper Quin Fischer including shots that sailed over the net. But as BCCS continued to push, senior defender Tyler Guevara broke the scoreless tie netting his first of two goals in the match.

“Tyler is one of our players that have come through in tough moments throughout the season,” BCCS coach Chris Crefeld said. “So seeing him perform well in the playoffs was nice to see. He is a senior, a captain and has worked hard all four years so to see that hard work pay off, nothing is more satisfying as a coach to see your upperclassman perform well in a big game.”

His first goal came in the 20th minute of the first half, after Robert McMahan crossed a ball into the box where Guevara headed it past Fischer.

“The coach told me exactly what to do and I executed the play well. It worked out perfectly and got the ball right on my dome and put it right in the top corner. We usually don’t convert off of headers often being able to convert and starting off the lead was big,” Guevara said.

His second goal came in the 47th minute, with another header off a free kick from McMahan.

Along with the strong offensive effort, the Eagles back line held up strong throughout turning away several chances from Riverview.

BCCS goalkeeper Michael Lanigan put together a strong performance, turning away a flurry of shots in the first half and late in the second half.

“He has grown a lot over the year,” Crefeld said. “He has worked hard this year putting in a lot of time and it's good to see him perform. This game is great for his confidence because he’s a great player, and when you do well and keep working hard, were are hoping to continue to be successful in the next round against another tough opponent.”

With the win over the Raiders, the Eagles will now move onto the quarterfinals to take on the winner of No. 5 Aquinas Academy or No. 12 Greensburg Central Catholic. The time and location for the match is to be determined.
