PITTSBURGH ― The birthplace of modern zombies has always drawn horror filmmakers to western Pennsylvania and that is why so many scary movies are filmed or based in the city.

So, not for the first time , Pittsburgh is being recognized for its horror movie legacy. Pittsburgh has earned the top spot as the go-to city for Halloween movies, according to a new report from InsureMyTrip .

With Halloween coming this Thursday, researchers for the travel insurance company analyzed IMDb data from the largest U.S. cities to find where the most Halloween films were shot.

    Why Pittsburgh?

With 104 horror films under its belt, Pittsburgh’s gritty, industrial backdrop has become synonymous with spine-chilling cinema. Famously known as the home of George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead,” Pittsburgh continues to play a major role in horror film history. Other horror hits shot in the city include “The Pale Blue Eye” and “Archive 81,” the company reported.

Pittsburgh also was the filming city for "Silence of the Lambs," considered the first horror movie to ever win the Best Picture Oscar.

Pittsburgh’s eerie industrial sites, abandoned buildings, and atmospheric streetscapes make it the perfect setting for horror movies that haunt viewers for years to come, the company said.
