Jim Shafel memorial trail ride
On Wednesday, July 17, a local group of trail riders rode to White Potato Lake in Pound, in honor of one of their members, Jim Shafel, who passed away in 2023. Jim was an enthusiastic member of the club who enjoyed backcountry riding alongside like minded people. The group’s destination was Brad’s Wouters Front II Pub located on the lake where they were treated to great burgers and beverages.
Plane crash near EAA Airventure in Oshkosh; victims identified
OSHKOSH, Wis. - The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office identified on Wednesday, July 24 the two men who were killed in a plane crash in the Town of Nekimi on Monday, July 22. Officials say the crash victims are Sean Tommervik, 37, formerly of El Paso, Texas, who had recently moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – and James Sullivan, 32, formerly of Nashville, Tennessee, who had recently moved to Brooklyn, New York.

Special concert honors Chmel's connection to Birch Creek
Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Egg Harbor continues to keep the beat of the Big Band Jazz session, but you will notice one important person missing from the faculty ensemble. Drummer Bob Chmel passed away earlier this year after a distinguished music career with over 30 years of faculty experience at Birch Creek Music Performance Center. In addition to playing at Birch Creek, the Kent State University played with the likes of the Glenn Miller Band and Frank Sinatra, Jr. Executive Director Mona Christensen says Chmel had an immense knowledge and passion for jazz music, something he made sure to pass onto his students and audiences.
Lakes Country Public Library dedication
LAKEWOOD – The Lakes Country Public Library Board of Trustees has announced that a formal dedication and open house of its beautiful new library will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 11 a.m. The facility has been doubled in size with a 3,000-square-foot addition and a total renovation of the old building. The project began in September 2023 with a very well-attended ground-breaking.
