A Beaverton woman was arrested after stealing a backpack containing $50,000 worth of trading cards and jewelry.

According to the Beaverton Police Department, a man reported his backpack stolen after accidentally dropping it while exiting a MAX train Sunday, July 7, at the Beaverton Transit Center.

Surveillance video showed Dawn Castro, 34, quickly snatching the bag and making no effort to locate the owner or turn it in to authorities.

The backpack contained coveted sports trading cards, including the likes of Mickey Mantle, Joe Montana, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant — valued at thousands of dollars. The bag also held expensive jewelry, which Castro went on to pawn at a local shop.

Police discovered the stolen memorabilia on Facebook Marketplace and arranged a sting operation to meet with Castro under the pretense of purchasing the trading cards.

Around noon Monday, July 8, Beaverton Police Detectives met with and arrested Castro at the Beaverton Transit Center.

All of the stolen trading cards were found in Castro's possession, and detectives were able to locate the jewelry and arrange for its return to the victim.

Considering the value of the property, police said Castro is being charged with first-degree aggravated theft.
