    Pitt County, North Carolina:

A tale of North Carolina, that may have been forgotten by few and is not so widespread anymore due to the land now being privately owned still lives on today.

As many of us from the area love to hold on to history, this story of love will shine on forever known as the legend of the Pactolus light.

Most legends take place after the person succumbed to a train accident. This specific one doesn't include a dramatic wreck, but a sorrowful murder. The man took off on horseback from Greenville heading toward Pactolus where he planned to meet up with the love of his life, and fiance.

When the train arrived, the gentleman never arrived to meet his love. Sadly, as he rode on the trail he caught the attention of three men who were walking the train tracks. The three men approached the man and ambushed him, murdering him.

The young lovers body was hidden in the woods, although his frightened horse took off, returning to Greenvile two days after the death of his owner. The family knew that the sign of the horse returning home alone was a bad omen, and went to thoroughly search for their family member. Though their search yielded with no body in much dismay.

As of today, the train tracks have been long removed from the area, but the light shines bright leaving his memory behind. The haunting soul of the young man lingers behind leaving his love in the distance of the memory of the tracks that once laid in the area. According to many who have seen his fate left behind, they claim to see a glowing orb of light floating on the tracks that he once rode to meet his love. The light tends to float at waist level, as if the man is walking next to his horse.

The legend of the lights is believed to be still in existance for the man to remind his love, his fiancee, to know that he is there looking for her. He wanted her to know that he was on the way to meet her, and be in her loving arms once more.

The land the tracks sit on are sadly now on private land and visiting is not warented. Most people are ran off the property and or police are called. Though we all can imagine what it was like to see this lovers light live on, lets hope one day we all can witness it again.
