Robert, a 117-year old doll with a distrubing appearance, continues to captivate and unsettle visitors at the Fort East Martello Museum. With his careworn face, beady black eyes, and malevolent smirk, Robert's presence has been linked to a series of misfortunes, including car accidents, broken bones and job losses.

Currently housed in a climate-controlled display case donated by a dedicated fan, Robert has maintained his eerie reputation. Despite the museum's efforts to preserve the doll in optimal conditions, reports of supernatural occurrences associated with him persist.

Robert was originally the property of Robert Eugene Otto, an eccentric artist and member of a prominent Key West family. The doll was a gift from Otto's grandfather, acquired during a trip to Germany. Otto's fascination with the doll continued into his adult life, and he even placed Robert in a prominent position at his home, "The Artist House." Reports of Robert's unsettling behavior such as moving on it's own and changing expression began to surface during Otto's lifetime and continued with his successor, Myrtle Reuter, who eventually donated the doll to the museum in 1994.

Since Robert's arrival at the Fort East Martello Museum, the doll has become a local legend and tourist attraction. He has been featured on TV shows, ghost tours, and even inspired a horror movie. His story has generated a dedicated following, leading to the creation of Robert-themed merchandise and visitors often leave him candy, money, and even items like marijuana.

Letters sent to Robert can be seen in the museumPhoto bySusan Smith

Robert receives numerous letters and emails, many of which are apologies from people who believe they have incurred his wrath. Cori Convertito, the museum curartor, manages Robert's correspondence and social media presence. She has responded to fan mail, including poignant letters from children and those seeking Robert's advice.

Despite the doll's unsettling reputation, Convertito remains skeptical about Robert's supernatural abilities. "I've never had a bad experience with him. It's always been a very basic relationship," she says. Convertito continues to care for Robert, conducting annual check-ups and managing his public image, all while maintaining a professional detachment from the doll's notorious past.

You can see Robert in person by visiting the Fort East Martello Museum located at 3501 South Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West, Florida.
