The average U.S. household is expected to spend about $875 on school supplies in 2024, according to the National Retail Federation. That's slightly down from last year's record high of $890. Households with college students are expected to spend about $1,364.75 per student, in line with last year's record of $1,366.95.

July 28, 2024 – Over-the-year, total nonfarm jobs increased in five metropolitan areas, decreased in six, and was unchanged or nearly unchanged in three for the year ending June 2024, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). A 63-year-old rural Odin man went to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia to get treatment for injuries he sustained after being hit with a baseball bat. When it comes to New Madrid Fault earthquakes, I think I've now seen it all. There was just a tremor that shook a neighborhood in O'Fallon, Illinois Saturday morning. I had to do a double-take when I saw this earthquake appear on the USGS earthquake map this morning. It was a 2.4 magnitude quake in a subdivision in O'Fallon, Illinois and it's been confirmed by a USGS seismologist. It was centered here.
Local Teens enjoy volunteering at Ministries Unlimited
TROY — Volunteering at a young age can be a resume builder and an experience earner, but volunteering at a young age can also instill a sense of community within oneself. Ministries Unlimited is a local food pantry serving the Triad School District communities of Troy, St. Jacob and Marine. They are fully supported by donations from the community churches, residents, and local businesses. The pantry is run by volunteers who gladly serve their patrons.
Alton Junior Legion wins state title
The IL Junior Legion State Tournament was held over the weekend in Jerseyville. The Alton Post 126 Junior (RED) team won their 2nd straight state title here in 2024. They beat host Jersey, 7-0 in the title game Sunday. Alton went 3-and-0 at the state tourney with wins over Danville (FRI) & Jerseyville (SAT, SUN).
