Westonka’s Sunnarborg qualifies for state golf meet

The boys golf 5AA Section Tournament was held at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. May 30 was the qualifier, where teams and individuals competed for a chance to play in the final round on June 3.

Mound Westonka battled throughout day one, climbing as high as third, but eventually ending up in sixth, only seven strokes from advancing to day two. Eighth grader Leif Kellner and freshman Hudson Pundsack each ended their seasons strong shooting 89. Sophomore Wes Foley had his best round of the year with an 85, claiming a tee time on day two. Sophomore Luke Sunnarborg had a hot start to the day with a 37, and finished in a tie for the fourth spot at 78.

Day two cut the field in half from 76 golfers to 37, with the four qualifying teams vying for the win and their invitation to the State Meet. Individual qualifiers hoped to claim one of the top five spots, not including those on the first place team. Foley made the most of his first time at the section meet, shooting 45 on the front and back for a total of 90.

Sunnarborg entered day two tied for fourth, hoping to earn a trip back to state, after his first time playing in the event last year. He had a fantastic day with four birdies, shooting even par on the front, and one under on the back, for a 71. He tied for second place, an incredible feat with such tough competitors in the field.

Medalist honors went to Peyton Savageau of Totino Grace, ranked 3rd in AA. Collin Ramos, also of Totino Grace and ranked 12th in AA, tied Sunnarborg for second place. Totino Grace easily took the team title and will have a chance to defend their 2023 state championship next week.

The AA State Tournament will be held June 11-12 at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
