BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – 14-year-old Kyneddi Miller was found in an emaciated to a skeletal state back in April.

Neighbors of the family say they had not seen the girl since 2019, but the last time they saw her she looked healthy.

Leading up to the events, they say they never suspected any form of child abuse. Lindsey Pack is a program coordinator with the Children’s Advocacy Center.  Pack told 59News not all signs of child abuse are obvious.

“A lot of times it’s kids who are acting out and are difficult to manage. Or can be unruly or have more challenging behavior,” said Pack.

Other signs of neglect can be difficult to spot, but may include poor hygiene, lack of clothing or supplies, or even lack of growth.  Children may also have poor school attendance.

School records showed that, in the instance of Kyneddi Miller, she had not been at school since either 2019 or 2020.

Pack also emphasized that when reporting suspected child abuse you must report it to the proper individuals.

“Every adult is a mandated reporter. So, if you are concerned or even if you have a gut feeling about child abuse you should report it,” said Pack.

Pack also pointed out that trusting a child who comes forward about the issue could make all the difference. She elaborated on how to report such instances to authorities.

“If a kid tells you something, you should just believe them. If they say, ‘so and so has done something to them’ or ‘so and so makes them feel unsafe’ then there’s probably a reason the kid is coming to you about that situation,” said Pack.

Pack said that reporting neglect or even suspected neglect can make all the difference and even save a child’s life.

She said the questionnaire to report child abuse may seem extensive but she assured that it is okay to not have all the answers and potentially saving a child is well worth the time.

If you suspect abuse or neglect, the hotline to report any issues is 1-800-352-6513.
