BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – With fireworks legal for use in the Mountain State, it is important to know when you are allowed to let them off.

Depending on where you live in West Virginia, there are certain ordinances you must follow when using fireworks.

From Appalachian history to modern importance, beekeeping is a timeless artform

Fireworks are a part of American culture and they are not just used on Independence Day.

59News traveled to Beckley to find out more about the city’s rules when it comes to fireworks.

Chris Graham, Fire Marshal for the City of Beckley, explained that Beckley residents should only use fireworks on certain holidays.

“We’re only supposed to do fireworks from 6 in the evening to 11 at night on Memorial Day, July 4 th , Labor Day, and New Year’s Eve. People are doing it recreationally now and it’s legal in the state of West Virginia. We see a little more often – especially this time of year,” said Graham.

A common problem that many face is hearing fireworks late at night and without notice.

Graham said using fireworks without notice can lead to potential dangers.

“I think there is [a danger] for fire. Someone’s roof could catch fire and they are asleep. They maybe could not realize it and not escape their home. There is more danger. You hear the loud pops and bangs. Sometimes people mistake that for gunshots. That may send law enforcement on false calls so we really need to watch and be mindful,” said Graham to 59News.

Graham said that different cities may have different rules when it comes to using fireworks.

Remember: if you are setting off fireworks, be mindful of your city’s rules and those who live around you.
