Your StormTracker 59 team goes back into the weather files to highlight some of the most impactful weather of the month:
Temperatures in June
June 2024 was another historically warm month, as we ended up tied for the ninth warmest June on record, with us being 2.0 degrees above normal for the month at 70.3 degrees. That’s a good bit off of the record of 72.7 degrees set back in 1943, but also a good bit above the normal of 68.3 degrees.
June featured twenty-one days that were above normal! The warmest stretch of weather in comparison to average took place from June 13th to June 23rd, which featured above average temperatures every day, including two days above 90 degrees – Beckley had not reached 90 degrees since June 15th, 2022 – we went just over two years without a 90 degree day until June 21st when we reached 90 degrees on the first full day of summer and then cranked up another degree to 91 degrees on June 22nd. In fact, only one day featured below average temperatures for the second half of the month.
Over an inch and a half of rain during the last week of the month, including almost an inch alone on June 26th bumped Beckley up to 2.9 inches of rain for the month – far below the average of 4.3 inches but well above the record low to where we didn’t even crack the top ten driest Junes on record. Nevertheless though, consecutive below average months have put many areas near or at moderate drought as of the end of June.
Wettest Day : 0.88″ (June 26th)
Full Moon – The Strawberry Moon
The full moon for June was the Strawberry Moon, which took place on the first full day of summer on June 21st. Viewing was great a couple of days before the moon was full, and cirrocumulus was common around the full moon, making for a cool display!
