BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Experts with the American Camp Association said summer camp has benefits for kids, outside of learning new skills.
The experts have said camp gives kids a network of caring adults who are able to serve as mentors.
Kids learn the “Four C’s” of the camp community: Compassion, contribution, commitment, and character.
The kids at Jalin Tucker Literacy and Arts Summer Camp in Beckley on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, were gathered at Freedom Park in Beckley for exercise.
They said they have learned American Sign Language (ASL), along with being given a number of art and reading activities.
Spook-filled week takes over Greenbrier County Scout Day Camp They said camp is also a good time.
“We have just been playing games, outside, and having fun, just to keep our moods happy,” explained Jordan Thompson, a camper.
Bryson Cross, another camper, said he was happy to discover orange sorbet ‘push-ups’ at snack time.
“These bring back memories from when I was about four, five years old, and these have been around for so many years, and I’m surprised they still have them,” said Bryson, tasting the ice cream. “Very good.”
Ten interesting facts you might not have known about West Virginia Camp organizer Crystal Hairston said the camp is accepting donations of money and food, including breakfast foods and sugar-free food.
Those who want to make a donation may stop by the camp at 100 Washington Street, Beckley, Monday through Thursday.
