BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Beckley City Council members came together on Tuesday at a meeting which saw approval of the renaming of a section of the Beckley Intermodal Gateway to Bill Withers Plaza.

The development came just days after the Fourth Annual Bill Withers Festival was successfully held atop the Beckley Intermodal Gateway. The event is held each year to honor the work and legacy of the Raleigh County native.

The renaming, according to Beckley Mayor Ryan Neal, would pertain to the upper area of the Intermodal Gateway where festivals and local events are frequently held.

Director of Beckley Events, Jill Moorefield was present for the meeting and provided updates with regard to the ongoing Bill Withers Project.

This included details regarding currently ongoing installation plans for amenities such as musical playground equipment, picnic tables, interactive signage and, perhaps most significantly, the Bill Withers statue for which sufficient funds are confirmed to have been raised.

“We’ll still call the whole building the Beckley Intermodal Gateway, but we’d like to call the plaza the Bill Withers Plaza,” said Moorefield of the venue. “Hopefully this fall, before Veteran’s Day hopefully, we’ll get the Bill Withers statue installed.”

Members of Beckley City Council voted in favor of the notion, leading to the passage of the Resolution for the renaming of the section of the Beckley Intermodal Gateway.
