BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Growing older does not necessarily mean giving up your independence. In fact, having your independence is one of the benefits of retirement age.

At a basic level, being independent means having control over your own life. Agencies just like Raleigh County Commission on Aging, make it their mission to help people maintain that independence.

The Director of Social Services with the Commission says there are a lot of ways to maintain an independent lifestyle.

“Obviously get out a socialize. If you become isolated, again that depression can sit in,” said Crystal Foley, the Director of Social Services.

Raleigh County Commission on Aging offers classes, a gym and in-house adult daycare. Keeping the mind young is also another way to keep yourself aware and independent.
