Another heat wave: 90s return this weekend, continue through Tuesday

    By Joe Fitzwater,

Saturday brings more heat to the region, as temperatures begin to nudge toward 90 degrees. A stray isolated shower still can’t be ruled out over the high country with a stalled front over the Shenandoah Valley. Everyone outside of the high mountain areas will stay dry under mostly sunny skies.

Sunday is just plain hot with high pressure nearly directly overhead. We’ll see high temperatures bump up to around 90 degrees. Again, the humidity won’t be too bad at least, so our heat index values won’t be much different than our air temperature but it’s still a hot day overall. Beckley has had three 90 degree days so far, and we’ll look to add to that during the afternoon.

Monday continues the hot pattern with high pressure nearly directly overhead. That pattern keeps us dry and it also makes us very hot, as we’ll see high temperatures in the low to mid 90s throughout the region outside of the mountain spots. In addition, there will be a touch more humidity at play, putting heat index values in the mid 90s up to near 100 during the afternoon. 92 degrees is the hottest we’ve been all year, and we’ll look to match that for Monday.

Tuesday keeps the heat cranking with a touch more humidity as temperatures once again jump up into the 90s – heat index values will be around 100 degrees in our western counties! However, we’ll finally start to see our rain chances on the increase, as scattered showers will be around as our next storm system approaches. Our hot and very dry pattern looks to finally exit for a bit as a more unsettled pattern heads in for midweek.

Wednesday provides a good chance for scattered showers and storms, some of which could be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall being the primary threats as a cold front pushes through the area. Though storms will be scattered in nature, there will be a lot of them, providing us with our first real solid shot at rain in a couple of weeks. Some localized spots could see over an inch of rain, though most of us will see a quarter to a half inch of rain.

Thursday provides the risk for an isolated shower or two in the morning with our front close by to our south and east, but high pressure will nose in for the afternoon from Canada and provide cooler and drier weather, as high temperatures struggle to reach 80 degrees.

Friday keeps our weather sunny with high pressure in control and high temperatures closer to average for this time of year in the low 80s.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, scattered storms return for the weekend as another front scoots in. Storms don’t look to be widespread, with ample breaks each day and high temperatures in the mid 80s. Chances for storms continue into Monday of next week with highs in the 80s.
