The days of 90 degrees are numbered as big changes expected this week; some rain too!

Monday will be another hot and muggy day with temps rising into the low 90s. Heat indexes push the upper 90s for our western counties while our mountains skirt the low 90s. Stay hydrated out there. An area of disturbance by the Great Lakes continues to try to through moisture our way but high pressure keeps us protected through the day.

By the early evening, a stray shower and even rumble of thunder is possible for a select few of us. Showers and storms that do fire up in the muggy airmass won’t last much after sunset. A muggy night ahead with temps remaining in the low 70s. Upper 60s for about an hour before sunrise Tuesday morning.

Tuesday is a very mild start as temps push back into the 90s by the afternoon. Touch more humidity pushes heat indexes closer to 100 degrees for our western counties. A few more clouds push in for the afternoon as a cold front slides closer. A stray afternoon shower/t-storm possible with little relief from the rain or drought.

Tuesday night our cold front sits just towards our northwest with a few showers expected into the overnight hours. A rumble of thunder or two with strong winds and brief heavy downpour is possible but a better chance into Wednesday. Overnight lows remain stuffy in the upper 60s and low 70s.

Wednesday our cold front slides in from northwest to southeast. A great set up to see scattered showers most of the day. Morning rains will knock down our severe weather chances for the afternoon as temps struggle into the mid and upper 80s. By the afternoon our cold front sits over our region with scattered heavy downpours expected and occasional t-storm. One or two of which could be on the strong side. Damaging winds and street flooding will be the main concerns.

As the front pushes away Wednesday night, storms fade but a few showers linger into the night. Winds pick up 15-20mph with some healthy gusts as cooler air moves in. Overnight lows drop into the 60s as humidity levels drop.

Thursday morning showers continues to push out of the region for a soggy morning but a drier afternoon. Those farthest towards the southeast like Monroe and Giles counties will hold a better chance of showers into the afternoon. Those towards Nicholas and Fayette will start to see more sunshine as the day goes on. Highs are a cooler and more comfortable mid and upper 70s with lower humidity. Overnight lows dip back into the 50s for a very comfortable night.

Friday the cooler trend continues as temps struggle their way into the upper 60s by midday and mid to upper 70s by the late afternoon. A few showers towards our south try to inch north at times. The farther south you are from Beckley, the better chance of seeing a scattered shower into the afternoon. Shower fade into the night with lows back into the 50s.

Saturday a few showers push north but more dry time between each round. A partly cloudy day allows some sunshine through to warm us back near average. Highs for the western side of the viewing area push into the low 80s while the eastern mountains hover in the upper 70s. A few valleys nudge 80 degrees. A pop-up rumble of thunder into the late afternoon is possible, especially for those south and west of Beckley.

Sunday, a similar set up to Saturday as temps rebound into the low 80s after a cooler morning. A passing shower or two with an isolated t-storm towards the early evening may interrupt your outdoor event. Lows stay milder with extra cloud cover Sunday night with temps in the low to mid 60s.

Monday we dry out a bit for a warmer day with the extra sunshine. Highs push into the low to mid 80s for all. A few showers into the afternoon are possible but in a hit and miss fashion. Don’t be surprised if you stay dry all day.

In your extended forecast, we start to get some help from the heat and humidity as our jet stream wobbles a bit. The change brings cooler days and more rain chances to help improve our drought conditions. We’re still a long way off from hitting our average July rainfall totals but closer than we were at the beginning of the month.
