BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – There are many things that can distract you while driving.

The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program reminds drivers of motorcycle safety during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Construction zones can be a place where drivers allow small distractions to overtake their focus from their responsibilities on the road.

The distractions can range anywhere from looking at your cell phone to snacking on a candy bar you got for your commute.

The Regional Highway Safety Coordinator, Sergeant Jamie Wilhite, told 59News one tiny distraction could harm more than just yourself.

“You look around, any time you’re entering a construction zone, I mean, typically there’s concrete barriers, the lanes narrow, you’ve got people out there working, you’ve got cars that may or may not be paying attention. So, all those factors could lead to some very dangerous situations,” said Sgt. Wilhite.

Additionally, if you get pulled over for speeding in a work zone, the fine could be much higher than normal.

WVDOT says “motorcyclist safety is everyone’s safety”

Next time you go through one of these work zones, give the construction workers a brake, as well as your attention.
