Driver in fatal Bedford pedestrian crash was allegedly on cell phone, had suspended license

A 53-year-old Concord woman was struck and killed in the Saturday crash.

The driver cited in a fatal crash with a pedestrian in Bedford over the weekend was allegedly driving with a suspended license and on his cell phone at the time of the collision, authorities said Monday.

The driver, a 34-year-old man from Billerica whose name has not been released, has been cited with operating with a suspended license, a crosswalk violation, and electronic device use while operating a motor vehicle, the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

The DA’s office said Bedford police responded on Saturday to Concord Road in the area of the bike path intersection around 3:36 p.m. to a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a car. The pedestrian, a 53-year-old Concord woman, was taken to Lahey Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The 34-year-old driver of the car remained at the scene, according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors said the initial investigation indicates that the woman was walking her bicycle in the crosswalk across the road when she was struck by the car. The 34-year-old driver was allegedly operating his vehicle with a suspended license at the time of the crash and using his cell phone.

“An immediate threat was also filed with the Registry of Motor Vehicles,” the DA’s office said. “He will be summonsed to appear in Concord District Court at a later date.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, the DA’s office said.
