Maumee announces plans to re-evaluate sewer ordinance
In response to efforts by a citizens group to repeal the city’s sewer inspection and remediation ordinance, Maumee officials announced Friday afternoon that they are re-evaluating the ordinance as part of “a multi-faceted approach to addressing the sanitary sewer system problems.” Officials said they are “working to determine how the city might spend public money on private property for a private purpose” and will “continue conversations and negotiations with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.” They also said the city will expand the proposed sewer repair grant program “to provide additional financial relief to our residents” and that the city “is committed to supporting the democratic process and the citizens’ initiative” to repeal the ordinance the city implemented in June. Another aspect of the plan announced Friday was the city’s intentions to hold a series of roundtable sessions with the community “to gather input on the solutions needed to address our city’s sanitary sewer problems.”

1 killed, 1 injured in 2-vehicle crash in Seneca County
TIFFIN — The Norwalk post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an early-morning crash that killed a Bucyrus, Ohio, man Friday. Dylan E. Schiets, 20, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, was driving south on State Rt. 53 near Seneca County Road 38 around 5:40 a.m. Friday when he crossed the center line and collided with a northbound car being driven by John P. Lunsford, 56, of Bucyrus, Ohio, officials said. Mr. Lunsford died at the scene. Mr. Schiets suffered serious injuries and was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center by air ambulance.

Helping Hands of St. Louis to give hundreds of children new shoes
Hundreds of children from East Toledo and beyond will receive new shoes to kick off the school year at Helping Hands of St. Louis’ annual Shoe Fest on Saturday. The 11th annual event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Helping Hands of St. Louis, 443 Sixth St. Children who attend the event will have their feet washed and then will be fitted for new shoes. The custom of washing the children’s feet is meant to mimic how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, said Theresa Bugelholl, longtime volunteer and founder of the Shoe Fest. The event will be first come, first served, and while Helping Hands focuses on serving East Toledo families, no child will be turned away if their shoe size is in stock. There will also be face painting, balloons, and games to keep children occupied as they wait their turn, Ms. Bugelholl said.
