Various Gaithersburg Neighborhoods to Participate in Annual “National Night Out Against Crime” Campaign on August 6th
Several Gaithersburg neighborhoods are joining communities across the country to participate in the National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime campaign. On Tuesday, August 6, these neighborhoods will hold events to increase drug prevention awareness, generate support for anti-crime programs, encourage residents to be involved in their communities, and send a message that neighborhoods and businesses are organized to fight back against crime. The NNO programs help bring together residents, law enforcement agencies, local officials, civic groups, and neighborhood organizations. Participating neighborhoods include:
Plastic Bags Banned in Annapolis, Drive-Thrus May Be Next
The Annapolis City Council has passed legislation banning the use of plastic bags in most businesses, a move that does not quite align with a new Anne Arundel County law The bill, sponsored by Alderman Rob Savidge of Ward 7, was approved by a 7-1 vote and will take effect on January 22, 2025. Under this new law, grocery stores and other retailers will no longer provide free plastic bags, offering paper bags for 10 cents each instead. Exemptions include farmers markets, businesses providing fresh flowers, dry cleaners, pharmacies, and bulk items such as vegetables, nuts, and seafood. Alderman DaJuan Gay of Ward 6, the sole “no” vote, had proposed an amendment to exempt low-income residents, but it was defeated 5-3.

FOX5’s Zip Trip heading to Del Ray on Friday
D.C. news channel FOX5 is bringing its Zip Trip program to Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood on Friday. Zip Trip is a program that tours locations around the region every Friday over the summer to highlight community activities and the people who make the town. Police arrest Alexandria man for felony hit and run on Duke Street that seriously injured teen
The Alexandria Police Department (APD) said Alexandria resident Earl Lucas was arrested after the man allegedly hit a teen with his car on Duke Street and fled the scene. In a release, APD said officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run around 12:26 a.m. on Sunday, July 21, at the intersection of Duke and Jordan Streets. APD said a passing motorist’s dashcam helped police identify Lucas.

Montgomery County, MD Continues to Expand Recycling with Plastic Film Recycling
The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is now offering plastic film recycling services at the Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center in Derwood. Plastic film are flexible plastic bags and wraps. They are recycled differently than bottles and containers. For example, grocery bags and bread bags do not go in most curbside recycling bins. Instead, plastic bags and wraps should be taken to the Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center in Derwood or other plastic film drop-off locations.
