The identities of a Belleville woman and child who were killed Sunday when a vehicle crashed into a home were released Monday.

Shavonne Green, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 100 block of South 8th Street at 11:44 a.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. Torianna Bohanna, 4, was pronounced dead at the scene 11:46 a.m., Dye said.

The woman and child were related, and they lived in the home, Belleville Police Lt. Col. Mark Heffernan , the assistant chief of police, said Monday. Heffernan did not say how they were related.

A man intentionally slammed a vehicle into the home shortly after 9 a.m., killing the woman and child and setting the home afire, Belleville police said Sunday. The man is in custody.

One juvenile, whose identity was not released, was rescued from the burning building, according to police.

“Officers have reason to believe (the) actions were intentional,” Belleville police stated in a release Sunday. “This is being investigated as a double homicide.”

Belleville police issued a Code Red alert asking residents near Citizens Park to stay in their homes and lock their doors until the suspect, believed to be armed with a machete, could be taken into custody.

He was sighted near the Dollar Tree at 5831 Belleville Crossing and was captured within seconds, police stated in a release.

The suspect will be held at Belleville Police Department pending further investigation. Belleville Police are not currently seeking any additional suspects in this case.

“We’re confident we have the person responsible in custody,” Heffernan said Sunday. “The investigation is ongoing, however, and we’ll be presenting a case to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s office.”

The Belleville News-Democrat does not publish the name of crime suspects until charges are filed.
