Pup found hiding under car at Chicago intersection gets a dramatic makeover. See him

A sweet and playful pup is patiently waiting for a new home after he was found roaming the lonely streets of Chicago, an Illinois shelter says.

Elmer was discovered under a car at a busy intersection by a nurse, Paws Chicago said in an Instagram post featuring the dog. Apparently, Elmer had been running in the streets for weeks until he was spotted taking shelter at a stoplight.

“A nurse on her way to work stopped in the intersection, and crawled under the other car to help him. Without food to gain his trust, she patiently pet him until he stopped shaking and pulled him out to safety,” the caption in a Aug. 28 post said.

“We are so, so grateful to Elmer’s hero who kept him from another night on the streets, especially in this heat wave.

“She gave him to police who brought him to (Chicago Animal Care and Control), where we met Elmer and knew we could help give him a fresh start!”

The Instagram video shows a team ridding Elmer of the matted fur they said had plagued the pup for a long time. Witnesses say he had been running the streets for about four weeks, but his fur suggested he’d been on his own for longer than that.

And now, the 3-year-old Elmer looks like a brand new dog as he gleefully plays with a tennis ball, waiting for a new home to rebuild his life in.

“With his body and his spirit feeling much lighter now, Elmer is ready for a family that will be patient with him as he figures out how to be a dog,” the post said. “We don’t know how long he went without simple comforts, and it’s wonderful to watch him fall in love with toys and soft beds.”

Elmer was listed as available for adoption as of Aug. 29. For more information on Elmer or other adoptable pets, visit the Paws Chicago website.
