    Belleville West, East St. Louis renew rivalry with Maroons in hunt for a playoff spot

    Belleville East and Belleville West both have important Saturday afternoon Southwestern Conference match-ups this weekend, while Althoff faces off with Collinsville on Friday night.

    Here is a snapshot of those games and a key Mississippi Valley Conference showdown.

    COLLINSVILLE KAHOKS at ALTHOFF CRUSADERS

    Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Althoff High School.

    Althoff coach: Austin Frazier.

    2024 record : 5-0.

    Week 5 result: The Crusaders defeated Alton Marquette 49-0.

    Senior WR/DB Charleston Coldon caught an 18-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown, while sophomore QB Jayden Ellington completed 14-of-20 passes for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns. University of Oregon commit Dierre Hill Jr., meanwhile, rushed for 126 yards on just 4 carries, posting touchdown runs of 45 yards, 22 yards and 40 yards.

    Collinsville coach: Colton Rhodes.

    2024 record: 3-2.

    Week 5 result: The Kahoks defeated Granite City 41-0. Senior QB Chase Reynolds completed 14-of-18 passes for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns and also rushed for 85 yards on 8 carries.

    2023 matchup: Althoff defeated Collinsville 38-27.

    Stats: Hill Jr. continues to lead the area with 22 touchdowns and 136 total points. He also is atop the leader board with 966 yards rushing on 51 carries, good for an 18.9 yard-per-carry average.

    Additional notes : In the 2023 match-up, Collinsville led the Crusaders 21-7 in the 2nd quarter. Althoff, however, responded with 31 unaswered points to secure the victory.

    Lookahead to Week 7: Both teams resume action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, as Althoff visits Mater Dei and Collinsville hosts Marion.

    O’FALLON PANTHERS at BELLEVILLE EAST LANCERS

    Kickoff: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Belleville East High School.

    Belleville East coach: Michael Harrison.

    2024 record: 3-2 overall, 1-1 in Southwestern Conference play.

    Week 5 result: The Lancers defeated Alton 27-0. Junior RB Jaedon Beamon rushed for 90 yards on 12 carries, while sophomore WR James Johnson caught 5 passes for 81 yards.

    O’Fallon coach: Joe Speaks.

    2024 record: 0-5 overall, 0-2 in Southwestern Conference play.

    Week 4 result: The Panthers lost to East St. Louis 55-0.

    2023 matchup: Belleville East defeated O’Fallon 31-28.

    Stats: Beamon leads the Lancers with 6 rushing touchdowns. He’s rushed for 398 yards overall. Johnson, meanwhile, has caught 20 passes for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns.

    Additional note : The Lancers lead 7-0 at halftime before outscoring Alton 20-0 in the 2nd half.

    Lookahead to Week 7: Both teams resume SWC play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, as Belleville East travels to Edwardsville and O’Fallon visits Belleville West.

    BELLEVILLE WEST MAROONS at EAST ST. LOUIS FLYERS

    Kickoff: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at East St. Louis High School.

    Belleville West coach: Ken Turner.

    2024 record: 3-2 overall, 1-1 in Southwestern Conference action.

    Week 5 result: The Maroons lost to Edwardsville 35-0.

    East St. Louis coach: Darren Sunkett.

    2024 record: 5-0 overall, 2-0 in Southwestern Conference action.

    Week 5 result: The Flyers defeated O’Fallon 55-0. Senior WR Christopher Bennett Jr. returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, while senior RB Larevious Woods rushed for 108 yards on 8 carries.

    2023 matchup: East St. Louis defeated Belleville West 63-0.

    Stats: Woods leads the Flyers with 7 touchdowns and 42 total points. Senior QB Kendrick Lyons has completed 70-of-95 passes for 983 yards and 8 touchdowns. Sophomore WR Ronnie GoMiller, meanwhile, has grabbed 17 passes for 321 yards and 5 touchdowns.

    Additional notes: The Flyers led O’Fallon 34-0 after the 1st quarter and never looked back.

    Lookahead to Week 7: Both teams resume league play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, as East St. Louis hosts Alton and Belleville West entertains O’Fallon.

    MASCOUTAH INDIANS at TRIAD KNIGHTS

    Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Triad High School.

    Triad coach: Calvin Potthast.

    2024 record: 5-0 overall, 2-0 in Mississippi Valley Conference play.

    Week 5 result: The Knights defeated Jerseyeville 42-13. Senior QB Isaac Ackerman completed 7-of-11 passes for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns and also rushed for 59 yards. Senior WR Ian Dempsey caught 5 passes for 136 yards.

    Mascoutah coach: Aaron Hilgendorf.

    2024 record: 2-3 overall, 1-1 in Mississippi Valley Conference play.

    Week 5 result: Mascoutah defeated Civic Memorial 54-6. Sophomore RB Sean Murphy rushed for 229 yards and 3 touchdowns on 27 carries to anchor the Mascoutah attack. The Indians led 27-6 at halftime and officially ended all doubt with a 21-point 3rd quarter.

    2023 matchup: The Knights defeated the Indians 34-17.

    Stats: On the season, Murphy has rushed for 656 yards overall and 8 touchdowns. Ackerman, meanwhile, has thrown for 729 yards and 7 touchdowns while also rushing for 6 touchdowns and 419 yards.

    Additional notes: Off to an impressive 5-0 start, Triad has won its games by an average of nearly 23 points per contest. After an 0-2 start, Mascoutah has won 2 of its last 3 games, posting point totals of 35, 25 and 42.

    Lookahead to Week 7: Both teams resume MVC action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, as Triad visits Highland and Collinsville visits Althoff Mascoutah hosts Jerseyville.

    STATS LEADERS

    Several metro-east football players are putting up big seasons. Here is a look at how some of the top stars have performed through 5 weeks:

    Dierre Hill, Jr., Althoff, RB, senior. Hill Jr. is atop the leader board in the metropolitan St. Louis area in several categories, including touchdowns (22), rushing yards (966), total yards (966) and total points (136). Of note, the University of Oregon commit is averaging a whopping 18.9 yards per carry, also first in the area by a wide margin.

    Zion Taylor, Cahokia, QB, senior. Taylor is 4th among area leaders in passing yards with 1,480. He’s throw 6 touchdowns and has 0 interceptions in 105 passing attempts.

    Omar Mims Jr., Cahokia, WR, junior. Mims Jr. ranks 5th among area leaders in receiving yards with 482. He has caught 13 passes for an area-leading average of 37.1 yards per catch.

    Kingston Jones, Belleville East, P, sophomore. Jones is 3rd among area leaders in punting average at 43.63 yards per punt.

    Isaac Phipps, Cahokia, DE/LB, senior. Phipps leads the area with 8 quarterback sacks. Phipps also is tied with several other area leaders with 3 fumble recoveries.

    Clayton Lakatos, Edwardsville, WR/DB, senior. Lakatos is 5th among leaders in kickoff return average at 36.75 yards per return.

    Lucas Schwartzkopf, Red Bud, senior. Schwartzkopf is 5th among area leaders in solo tackles at 47.

    Michael Tongay, Collinsville, senior. Tongay is 2nd among area leaders in assists with 39.
