Man Found Dead In The Water At Rockaway Beach During A Summer When Drownings Were Common
Officials reported that a man was found dead in the water near the Rockaway Beach boardwalk in Queens early Monday morning. Police discovered the body shortly after midnight. According to the police, the man was spotted floating by bystanders at around 12:30 a.m. They immediately called 911, and first-responders quickly arrived at the scene. Even though CPR was performed, the man was unfortunately pronounced dead after being taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

The Guggenheim Museum has announced the lineup for the fall 2024 Works & Process series, which will include a sneak peak of Jeanine Tesori's newest opera Grounded, ahead of the opera's Met premiere when it opens the 2024-25 season. Met General Manager Peter Gelb will moderate the September 9 discussion with the creative team, and members of the cast will perform selections from the opera, based on the play of the same name by George Brant, who also penned the opera's libretto. Grounded concerns a fighter pilot who is grounded due to an unexpected pregnancy, and subsequently reassigned to piloting lethal drones remotely.

Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Retired Firefighter Danny Noonan has passed away after a battle with leukemia. He was one of nearly 700 FDNY members who responded to a fire at the New York Telephone Company in Manhattan in 1975. Many of them were struck with cancer in the aftermath.

Local Playwright, Alum to Present Free Play at Bandshell in August
HAWTHORNE, NJ - A local playwright and Hawthorne High School alum is presenting her latest production at the town bandshell with two dates in August. "The main reason she organized this group was because the high school theatre club came to a halt during that time and it allowed those students interested to continue performing in an outdoor environment," her mom, Susan Barbieri, said. "It also allowed Estelle to pursue her passion as a writer and director." Estelle is currently a film major at Hofstra University. Football To Hold 7 On 7 Contest Wednesday
The Verona High School football team will hold its first 7 on 7 tournament on Wednesday, July 24, beginning at 4 p.m. There are four pools set for the contest and 16 high schools will be competing, from Don Bosco Prep to Elizabeth, Mahwah, Montclair Kimberley Academy and more, as well as VHS. Seven on seven is a non-contact version of football that emphasizes passing and receiving skills.
