Recent arrest a reminder that motorized vehicles are not allowed on Bellingham’s trails

Police arrested a man last week for riding a homemade motorbike on pedestrian and bike trails in Bellingham.

Police say the man was creating safety issues for those on the trails and for vehicle traffic as the trail crosses into roadways. He was taken into custody Sept. 6.

“Motorized vehicles including motorcycles are prohibited from our trails and may only be driven on designated paved or gravel roadways within our parks,” Park Operations Manager Steve Janiszewski told The Bellingham Herald. “The primary reason for this regulation is to maintain the safety of our trail users. Cars, trucks and motorcycles have the ability to exceed 15 mph, which makes it dangerous for those on the trail. As you know, our trails are used by thousands of pedestrians, bicycle riders and sometimes wheelchairs. Our goal is to keep everyone safe.”

The suspect also faces charges of driving with a suspended license, attempting to elude a police vehicle and violation of a court protection order.

Violators of the trail rules are issued a civil infraction citation by the Bellingham Police Department.
