Whatcom County Undersheriff Steve Harris has been placed on paid administrative leave as of August 30, 2024, pending an investigation into complaints received by Sheriff Donnell "Tank" Tanksley and Whatcom County Human Resources. The decision to place Harris on administrative leave was announced in a statement released by Sheriff Tanksley earlier today.

According to the statement in an Email to Bellingham Metro News, the move is standard protocol for law enforcement agencies when investigating allegations of potential misconduct. Sheriff Tanksley emphasized that paid administrative leave is a non-disciplinary action and does not imply that the agency is confirming the validity of the allegations against the employee.

"It is important to preserve the integrity of the investigation, for the sake of the process as well as those involved," Sheriff Tanksley said. "This is why the investigation will be conducted by an independent investigator. I have every confidence the investigation will be conducted fairly and equitably. The investigation does not include criminal allegations."

The nature of the complaints against Undersheriff Harris has not been disclosed, and no further details were provided regarding the scope or expected timeline of the investigation.

Sheriff Tanksley affirmed the commitment of the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) to uphold the highest standards of conduct and accountability. "The public holds government employees to a high level of conduct: we do, too," he stated. "At the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, integrity is a cornerstone value that helps ensure we are serving all community members and WCSO staff fairly, equitably, and consistent with our mission, vision, and values."

The Sheriff’s statement highlights the department's dedication to maintaining credibility and accountability both internally and in the eyes of the public. The WCSO mission includes upholding the highest standards of performance, behavior, and ethics through conduct, appearance, demeanor, and decision-making.

The investigation into the complaints against Undersheriff Harris will continue under the direction of an independent investigator. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
