LYNDEN, WASHINGTON – The centerpiece of the highly anticipated Schoolyard Park is finally taking shape as the new timber-frame gazebo goes vertical, becoming a focal point of the community’s efforts to revitalize a historically significant site. This 1,500-square-foot open-air pavilion, featuring a concrete base with decorative architectural detailing, stands at the heart of the park, reflecting the spirit of the former Glenning School at 622 Glenning St that once occupied the grounds.

The gazebo, designed by Greg Robinson Architect of Bellingham, is more than just a shelter; it symbolizes the community’s dedication to preserving Lynden’s heritage. Positioned prominently at the park’s center, the structure’s design deviates from the covered walkway shown in the “master plans final,” embracing a custom heavy timber construction that draws inspiration from the past. Its overlapping roofs, arch siding, and trim details echo the architectural elements of Glenning School, seamlessly blending history with modern utility.

    Key Features Surrounding the Gazebo

While the gazebo serves as the park’s crown jewel, it is complemented by a host of additional features that together create a multi-functional and historically reflective community space:

    • Outdoor Amphitheater: Positioned near the gazebo, the amphitheater features terraced seating, a stage, and ADA ramps, offering a dynamic venue for performances and community gatherings. The amphitheater’s northwest and southeast elevations incorporate historical design elements, enhancing the park’s cohesive look.
    • Educational Grove and Memorial Walk: Surrounding the gazebo, these areas will host interpretive exhibits, community gardens, and local artist displays, weaving educational elements throughout the park and celebrating Lynden’s rich past.
    • Angled Parking and Infrastructure: The park will include 90+ parking stalls with ADA access and charging stations, supporting increased visitor numbers. Gateway entries featuring historical plaques and decorative steel or timber structures will mark the north and south entrances, creating a welcoming and informative entry experience.
    • Gathering Structures and Play Areas: Picnic tables, benches, and nature play elements, including climbing towers, swings, and logs, provide engaging spaces for families and visitors of all ages. Concrete and gravel pathways connect these features, ensuring accessibility throughout the park.

    Historical Influence and Community-Driven Design

The gazebo and other park structures are designed to honor the site’s legacy as the location of one of Lynden’s earliest schools. Architectural elements like obscure glass, historical plaques, and a paver outline of the old school buildings pay homage to the educational heritage of the site, bringing history to life for park-goers.

    Project Phases and Community Investment

The construction of Schoolyard Park, including the new gazebo, is being carried out in multiple phases, supported largely by community donations and city investment. The project has a projected cost of approximately $4.53 million, covering site grading, landscaping, play structures, and infrastructure like water, sewer, and electricity.

Phase 1 has focused on site demo, grading, and the construction of key pathways and the gazebo, with future phases set to complete additional landscaping, play elements, and parking facilities. The park will also feature special event areas with food truck hook-ups, making it a versatile community gathering space.

A New Hub for Lynden’s Community

As the gazebo rises, Schoolyard Park is poised to become a central hub for the Lynden community—a place where history and recreation come together. Whether attending a concert in the amphitheater, exploring the educational grove, or simply relaxing under the shade of the gazebo, visitors will find a space that celebrates both the past and future of Lynden.
