WHATCOM COUNTY, WASHINGTON - A strong gas odor sweeping across parts of Whatcom County has led to the closure of Nooksack Tribal offices and other key services. As of 3:35 PM, all tribal offices are shut down for the remainder of the day due to the overpowering smell. Authorities are urging residents in the Everson Housing sites to refrain from smoking or vaping outdoors as a safety precaution.

Earlier today, the Nooksack Clinic and Youth Program were also closed after officials detected a strong propane or sulfur-like odor in the area. Nooksack Tribal Police quickly issued advisories, calling for residents to avoid outdoor smoking or any activities that could pose a fire risk.

    What’s Causing the Odor?

The Bellingham Fire Department has confirmed that the source of the widespread sulfur-like smell is an accidental release of Mercaptan in Canada. Mercaptan, a chemical added to natural gas to give it its distinctive sulfur odor, was released into the air earlier today. Winds carried the smell south into Whatcom County, causing concern across northern areas, including Bellingham.

While today's Mercaptan release explains the smell, its important to point out that this does not account for similar odors reported in Whatcom County last month, which investigators never solved.

    What You Need to Know

Authorities are urging residents to take precautionary measures. If you detect a strong gas smell inside your home or suspect a natural gas leak, call 911 immediately. Residents are also reminded to contact 811 before digging to avoid hitting underground utility lines.

Stay tuned for updates as local authorities continue to monitor the situation.
