SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Starter Thomas White allowed only one run over the first five innings and the bullpen was perfect over the final four as the Beloit Sky Carp knocked off the South Bend Cubs 3-1 at Four Winds Field Thursday night.

South Bend grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run to center field by Andy Garriola off White (3-3). It was Garriola’s third homer of the season.

Beloit manager Billy Gardner was ejected in the inning by home plate umpire Jabril Geter-Abdulah.

Garner missed quite a show by his pitching staff.

White went on to pitch five innings, allowing five hits and just the one earned run. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out five.

Beloit relievers Yeuris Jimenez (one inning, zero walks, two strikeouts), Josh Ekness (two innings, one walk, one strikeout and Holt Jones (one inning, one walk, three strikeouts) did not allow a hit or a run. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound Jones was credited with his first save. Beloit pitchers recorded 11 strikeouts.

Beloit tied the game 1-1 in the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Tony Bullard and took the lead in the third when Ryan Ignoffo belted a two-out double to center and scored on a base hit by Kemp Alderman.

The Sky Carp made it 3-1 in the fifth inning with Gabe Miller and Ignoffo smacking back-to-back doubles off starter Will Sanders (2-7), who took the loss. Sanders went 4 2-3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.

Beloit outhit South Bend 9-5. Ignoffo led the way, going 3-for-5 to raise his batting average to .375. Both Alderman and Miller were both 2-for-4.

Beloit and South Bend meet again Friday at 6:05 p.m.
