    PREPS: Baylee Morse uses nice stretch on back nine to spur solid finish at Cougar Invite

    AVALON, Wis. — Clinton sophomore Baylee Morse delivered a solid outing on her home course as she shot a 107 at her team’s Cougar Invite at Prairie Woods Golf Course on Wednesday morning.

    Morse had a strong run on the back nine as she birdied the 11th hole, needing just two shots to sink her ball, before shooting an even par on holes No. 12 and 13. She also birdied the 4-par 17th hole to help her finish in a tie 16th overall.

    Cougars’ sophomore Emma Ahlert birided the 15th hole on her way to shooting a 110, putting her at 23rd, while junior teammate Evelyn Millard finished with a 119.

    Clinton only fielded three golfers and did not score as a team in the meet, which Elkhorn won with a team score of 375. Cambridge was second at 403 while Lakeside Lutheran was next at 405.

    Beloit Turner placed seventh with a 446 and was paced by sophomore Rowan Flanagan, who had three pars on her way to shooting a 107 and placing 16th. Junior Emma Edwards had a birdie on the 15th hole as she finished with a 110, placing her 23rd, while junior Portia Segerstrom had a pair of pars as she shot a 112 to place 26th. Freshman Lilyana Loera shot a 117 and sophomore Kieran Flanagan finished with a 134.

    Cambridge sophomore Jill Thompson won the meet by shooting an 82.

    • EAST TROY SCRAMBLE: On Monday, Turner placed fourth at Alpine Valley Resort in Elkhorn as part of a scramble hosted by the Trojans.

    The invite is a four-person event where each team plays four girls and the best score is taken from each golfer in the 18-hole showdown.

    Turner shot par in nine of the 18 rounds to finish with an overall score of 81. Jefferson and Lakeside Lutheran tied for first with a 76.

    Clinton was tied for fifth with the hosting Trojans at 84. The Cougars shot par on seven of their holes.

    • BOYS SOCCER: BELOIT MEMORIAL 8, RACINE HORLICK 0: Banks Denu led the Purple Knights’ charge in their season opener with five goals, including the first three of the game.

    John Anthony Aburto, Eduardo Gonzalez and Abraham Perez also found the back of the net and Jared Barajas had four assists.

    Goalie Beckham Denu was credited with the shutout with four saves.

    The Knights travel to Hononegah on Thursday.

    • GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: BIG FOOT 2, HARVARD (Ill.) 0: The Chiefs opened up their season with a sweep of the hosting Hornets on Tuesday night.

    Big Foot edged out Harvard in a close first set 25-22 before winning the second 25-17.

    Molly Andersen led the way with six kills while Mia Palmer set up plenty of attacks with nine assists. Natalie Klamm had a trio of aces while Annabelle Pearce had seven digs. Emilee Bush paced Harvard with four kills.

    • SOUTH BELOIT 2, EARLVILLE 0: The SoBos had a spectacular night from the serving line, racking up 10 aces on their way to a sweep over the visiting Red Raiders on Wednesday night.

    Junior Peyton Lervik, who had a team-high 15 digs, also led the way with 5 aces. Senior Mady Whaples added three and junior Serena Hoffman, who had five blocks, finished with two.

    South Beloit (1-1) won a thrilling opening set 26-24 before sealing the match with a more comfortable 25-15 win.

    Junior Macey Lineman had five kills for South Beloit while Hoffman added three.

    On Monday, the SoBos opened the season with a 25-17, 25-10 loss to Rockford Lutheran. Junior Shelby Ambrose had nine digs and Hoffman had three blocks in the match.
